On May 1, 2008, the Museum of the Marine held their Site Dedication at their building site in Jacksonville, NC. The event was a huge success! MajGen Ray Smith, USMC (Ret.) Founder/Past Chairman of the Board for the Museum, started off the Site Dedication with a brief history of the Museum and how it came to be.
Other notable speakers included Rep. Russell Tucker, Onslow and Duplin County (Dist. 4) , NC House of Representative, Jacksonville Mayor Sammy Phillips, Lionell Midgett, Chairman Onslow County Board of Commissioners, Col. Richard P. Flatau, Jr., Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, Mona Padrick, President, Jacksonville/Onslow Chamber of Commerce, Lisa Whitman-Grice, Director, Onslow County Museum and Mat Raymond, Jr., Owner, Sanders Ford and Local Campaign Co-Chairman for the Museum of the Marine. The support from the local community has been outstanding!
The Keynote speaker was LtCol Kim Kimball, USMC (Ret.). He gave a speech that was titled "A Short History of the Carolina Marines". He spoke of the many "firsts" that we seek to honor in the Museum including Montford Point, Women Marines, body armor, heliborne assault and amphibious tactics.
After the ceremony, the community gathered for lunch at the Site. Thanks again for all the positive support from the local community. We also want to thank the volunteers for that day. You made the Dedication a huge success!
