CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
CAROLINA MUSEUM OF THE MARINE AND AL GRAY CIVIC INSTITUTE
Carolina Museum of the Marine and Al Gray Civic Institute, which is located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is seeking a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) who can lead the successful construction of the Museum and further the development and expansion of the Institute.
Carolina Museum of the Marine and Al Gray Civic Institute is committed to honoring the legacy of Carolina Marines and Sailors, sustaining the ideals that are the foundation of our nation and inspiring principled, committed citizens.
We are building a 40,000 square foot Museum showcasing Carolina Marines and Sailors who, through their service to the nation, exemplify civic commitment in action. The interactive and state-of-the-art Museum will utilize the latest technologies to highlight the many accomplishments and innovations of Carolina Marines and Sailors and the enduring contributions of their host communities. Al Gray Civic Institute will be an integral part of and co-located with the Museum. The Institute will provide onsite, on location and online symposia, conferences and courses which will fulfill General Gray’s vision of teaching young and old alike the virtues of knowledgeable and engaged citizenship.
Phase 1 of the project is completed and includes construction of Reflection and Celebration Park (world’s largest eagle, globe and anchor statue, reflecting pool, walkways and memorial benches) as well as architectural and engineering plans and in-ground infrastructure for the Museum. In its recently adopted budget, the State of North Carolina has provided $26M in funding for Phase 2 which includes construction of the Museum and its exhibit space and development of Al Gray Civic Institute. Carolina Museum of the Marine and Al Gray Civic Institute is a 501(c)(3) North Carolina nonprofit corporation and adheres to the highest ethical and non-profit corporate requirements. More information on the Museum and Institute can be found at www.MuseumoftheMarine.org.
The CEO directs, administers and coordinates activities of the organization in support of policies, goals and objectives established by the Board of Directors and in accordance with the organization’s Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws. It is expected that the candidate will have extensive experience in organizational leadership, finances, personnel, stakeholder engagement, planning and other qualifications set out in the Position Description.
The ideal candidate would have experience as a senior officer in the military or as a senior executive in a military department or the DoD, although that is not an absolute requirement. If the candidate were a retired USMC general officer, that would have obvious benefits because of the nature of the Mission of the organization. To be considered, candidates without direct experience in the military services or the DoD should have a demonstrable familiarity with the military services, especially the USMC. It would be ideal if the candidate had direct or supervisory experience with project management (construction, acquisition, engineering, or other related activities) since a significant portion of the CEO’s initial efforts must be concentrated on all aspects of construction of the Museum working with a team of engaged professionals and firms. It would also be ideal if the candidate had some experience with museums and educational organizations, and some engagement with non-profit organizations as an executive or board member.
Interested applicants should submit letter of interest and resume or curriculum vitae by email to the Chair of the CEO Search Committee and Vice Chair of the Board of Directors, Mark Cramer, at CEOsearch@museumofthemarine.org.
