The event was marked by patriotic performances of the National Anthem, Anchors Aweigh, and The Marines’ Hymn, all played by 2nd Marine Division Band. Keynote speakers included Jacksonville Mayor Sammy Phillips, NC State Senator Michael Lazzara, and Brigadier General Adolfo Garcia, each expressing their excitement and pride in seeing this vision come to life. Kevin Stewart, retired Brigadier General and CEO of the museum, highlighted the vital role of the Jacksonville community and the Marines in making this dream a reality. “This museum must be a living tribute to all Carolina Marines and Sailors. In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of those who contributed to this endeavor: the donors, the board members, the staff, the planners, the builders, and the dreamers. We’re building a world-class museum. Semper Fi,” Stewart stated.

Sergeant Major Joseph Houle, also retired and the former director of operations, shared his enthusiasm for the future visitors’ experience. “They’re going to be able to walk into the museum and not only get a history of the Carolina Museum but leadership. What makes a Marine a Marine,” said Houle.

Retired US Marine Maj. Gen. Ray Smith expressed the sentiment of many attendees, calling the groundbreaking “a 24-year dream come true.” He added, “Or at least the first half of the dream come true. It’ll be totally true when there’s a line of cars coming into Jacksonville to see it.” This ceremony not only celebrated the start of construction but also the unwavering dedication of the community and supporters who have brought the museum to this pivotal point.
